Artists in Conversation

As Subject and Object: Contemporary Book Artists Explore Sacred Hebrew Texts

Join co-curator Matthew Baigell and three of the exhibited artists for a gallery tour, conversation, and Q&A.

Matthew Baigell, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Art History, Rutgers University, has written widely on Jewish-American Art.

Siona Benjamin, M.F.A., Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois, engages in dialogue between the ancient and the modern, often confronting unresolved political and social issues. Her style is a blend of Indian and Persian miniatures, Byzantine icons, illuminated manuscripts, and elements from pop culture.

John Shorb, M.Div., Union Theological Seminary, is a print maker, painter, and installation artist who roots his work in stories and places that range from the Bible to the present day. He is currently in residence at the Memphis Theological Seminary.

David Wander, graduate of Pratt University, has studied with Rabbi David Kraemer of the Jewish Theological Seminary. He has created a Passover Haggadah as well as several works on Jewish themes, notably the Five Scrolls. He worked in advertising for many years as a storyboard artist, and is also known for his landscapes.
