Lecture: Old and New Testaments: Exhibiting Biblical Art in the Age of Spectacle

The continued relevance of religious subject matter in modern art proves that modernity is not always marked by secularity. Sarah Schaefer, co-curator of Sacred Visions: Nineteenth-Century Biblical Art from the Dahesh Museum Collection, Ph.D. candidate, Columbia University, and Whitney Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, looks at the past two centuries – from World’s Fairs with their Holy Land reconstructions, to the evolution of the modern galleryto examine the relationship between biblical representation and diverse modes of display.
