2012 Summer Camp Workshops at MOBIA

Bring your campers to MOBIA this summer for free digital photography workshops!

Photo Stories is a fast-paced, two-hour workshop for children ages 7 – 14 who attend summer day camps.  Children discuss character, setting, action and detail while looking closely at photographs and discover that artworks are great storytellers. The young photographers learn how to compose a photograph using camera angles such as bird’s - eye - view and worm’s - eye - view. Armed with these tricks of the trade, digital cameras and a shooting assignment, the campers take a walking tour of the neighborhood and record their experience. During a quick editing process, children determine which photographs have the most successful narrative elements. Each child goes home with two photographs printed on 4" x 6" glossy paper.

Words & Pictures: Storytelling Through Art, Summer 2011
In 2011, MOBIA hosted a series of workshops in which children created collages inspired by the abstract paintings of NYC artist Makoto Fujimura, whose work is part of the exhibition On Eagles’ Wings: The King James Bible Turns 400.  Fujimura created eighty-nine decorative letters, the opening letter of each chapter of each Gospel, using Japanese materials, pigments made of ground precious minerals, gold, and platinum.  In the gallery, the youngsters identified five ways that the artist approached his letter making process - hidden, stenciled, shaped, free-form, and constructed.  After working with a photographer to turn their bodies into the shape of the first initial of their name, the children were challenged to use various materials to make an Illuminated Initial Collage.
