Testimonies to Spanish Faith

February 03–April 29, 2000

Organized jointly between the American Bible Society and The Hispanic Society of America, and especially its Curator of Prints and Photographs, Dr. Patrick Lenaghan, the exhibition includes a selection of approximately 50 photographs from the Hispanic Society’s collections that document religious processions in cities, towns, and villages during the 1920s. In addition, polychrome statues, made available through loans, reveal the vivid and impassioned sculpture at the center of this veneration. Videos of the Mystery of Elche and footage of contemporary Holy Week processions testify to the continuing tradition of such worship in modern Spain.
