Printing the WordThe Art of Watanabe Sadao February 09–May 19, 2001 |
Drawn from the collection of Anne H.H. Pyle, Printing the Word presents more than 75 prints done by the artist Watanabe Sadao, one of Japan’s foremost Christian artists. Watanabe Sadao, one of Japan’s foremost Christian artists, left a remarkable legacy of biblical prints rendered in the folk-craft idiom of a country that has been extraordinarily resistant to the Christian message. The more than 75 prints included in the exhibition illustrate the artist’s quest to “express my Christianity within a Japanese context instead of just adapting the European tradition.” The works are on loan from the collection of Anne H.H. Pyle, an artist and art historian who was also a student of Watanabe’s. |
