The Holy Land through the Eyes of Explorers

June 15–September 15, 2001

The first modern academic institution to be established in Jerusalem, the Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Français, was founded by French Dominicans in 1890. Early in its history, the Ecole created a photographic archive, which now includes more than 20,000 photographs of the Holy Land and the Near East dating from the mid-1890s on. Drawing from this archive, the exhibition presents a selection of photographs taken by Pere Savignac and Pere Jaussen at the turn of the 20th century.
