MOBIA’s First Gala Event Raises Over $100k for Exhibitions and Programs
The Museum of Biblical Art’s first-ever gala award dinner raised $110,000 last Monday night, directly benefiting the Museum’s exhibitions and programs and making the evening a resounding success. The event was held May 2nd, in the American Bible Society building where MOBIA founding trustee William F. Baker was celebrated with the Museum’s first Visionary Award. Honorary co-chair Bill Moyers gave a stirring speech honoring Bill Baker’s many accomplishments in public broadcasting, business and education, and as a community leader and family man. Metropolitan Museum of Art Director Emeritus and gala co-chair Philippe de Montebello was also on hand to show his support and convey his thoughts on Bill Baker’s numerous contributions to New York City’s cultural landscape.
MOBIA Board Chair and gala host Roberta Green Ahmanson presided over the affair attended by approximately 200 guests, including Councilwoman Gale Brewer; Judith Moyers; His Eminence Archbishop Dimitrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America; artist and IAM founder Makoto Fujimura; and Most Reverend Octavio Cisneros. MOBIA employed a special decorative technique to adorn the 20 round dining tables in the brightly lit hall—original artwork on loan from artists and friends with a special connection to the Museum, including miniature sculptures, paintings, and mixed-media pieces. Mrs. Ahmanson presented Bill Baker with the MOBIA Visionary Award—a unique, hand-made book created by New York City artist Dean Ebben—and an auction of donated artwork raised $17,000. The evening ended with guests receiving commemorative gifts bags that included a catalog from MOBIA exhibitions, current and past.
The Museum of Biblical Art extends a sincere “thank you” to the American Bible Society, the Board of Trustees, Schneider’s Selections, Juilliard musicians Aleisha and Amanda Verner, Martello Media, the gala committee, MOBIA staff, friends, volunteers, and business partners for their generous support. Thank you for making our first gala event a success!
