Dürer's engraving of "Adam and Eve", also known as "The Fall of Man", is admired for its technical mastery and representation of paradisiacal beauty. Despite these qualities, modern viewers may find it conventional, barely distinguishable from other images of Adam and Eve plucking the forbidden fruit. A closer look at its narrative contents, however, reveals an intense, unfolding drama and significant theological implications. Dr. Rangsook Yoon, Visiting Professor of Art at Central College, will help interpret this famous image in an illustrated lecture.
Program Details & Registration InformationThe Florence Portfolio (part of which is on display in MOBIA's Education Center) is composed of 20 etchings created in July 1993 by six contemporary artists exploring the theme of sacrifice in the Old and New Testaments. These images - probing, beautiful, and haunting - represent high achievement in the graphic arts and comprise a modern compliment to Dürer's masterful engravings. This "Meet the Artists" evening offers the museum-going public the opportunity to converse with the artists about their contributions to this unique project.

As "Albrecht Dürer: Art in Transition" reveals, Dürer masterfully used woodblock printing to create beautiful works of art. Join artist Amanda Williams in creating your own masterful prints as she teaches this time-honored skill. Bring your own black and white prints to use as a design. Suitable for ages 7-12.
Family workshops are limited to 20 children, so please register early. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $5 per person or $15 per family, and always free for MOBIA members.
Colin Eisler, Robert Lehman Professor of Fine Arts at New York University, will focus on Dürer's drawing of the Madonna and Child surrounded by animals, discussing the artist's keen observation of nature and mastery of the graphic medium.
